Facts About Boat Winterization
Whether your boat will be kept on land or in the water, it is imperative that you have it winterized. Here’s a formidable fact from Boat US:
“Fresh water expands in volume by about nine percent when it freezes and can push outwards with a force of tens of thousands of pounds per square inch. That expansion can crack an engine block, damage fiberglass, split hoses, or destroy a refrigeration system overnight.”
That fact alone should instill in you enough fear and respect to have your boat winterized without question. Way too often, repairing freeze damage involves replacing the complete engine which is not only time consuming but quite costly.
Of course, the most preferred method of storing your boat throughout the winter would be inside a climate-controlled facility with a backup generator. However, most people don’t have that option. So, then it comes down to leaving your boat in the water or storing it on the hard. Either option has its pros and cons.
Perhaps you’ll be keeping your boat in the water for the winter. If so, here’s a list of things that are imperative to do:
Why Winterize Your Boat?
Spending a little money now could save you a lot of money later. Old man winter can be very harsh on your boat. Cracked blocks, corrosion, fuel degradation, accumulated ice can split open hatches and window tracks, dry and cracking vinyl, mold, mildew and corrosion of electronics are just some of the things that can happen due to not winterizing your boat.
Plan ahead. When boating season gets here, you want to get out in the water as quick as possible. If you have damage from the winter weather or a maintenance problem that needed to be taken care of and you wait until the new boating season, which is one of the busiest seasons for the boat specialists, your fun in the sun could be delayed quite a bit. Not to mention that most insurance policies do not cover damage due to neglect or lack of maintenance.

Shrink Wrapping Your Boat
Winterizing and shrink wrapping a boat go hand in hand. If you don’t have the option of keeping your boat covered in a climate-controlled boat storage, you should definitely consider shrink wrapping.
Some of the benefits are:
- Keep moisture and pests out
- Protects from UV rays
- Stronger than tarps, boat covers or boat canopies so it can withstand high winds
- Protects from ice damage
- Protects your deck and gel coat
Of course, if you have a Custom-made cover for your boat, then shrink wrapping will not be needed. However, since it can be quite expensive for a custom-fitted cover, many boaters forego this investment. But you definitely don’t want to go to the other extreme and use just anything to cover your boat for the winter. Here’s a couple of covers that Kompletely Kustom Marine does not recommend and why:
